Tesco is backing a ground-breaking training scheme aimed at helping its suppliers develop and retain the highest calibre of people.
The programme, which was designed in partnership with recruitment and training specialist MorePeople, is being offered initially to produce and horticulture suppliers.
It focuses on leadership skills and will offer seminars on subjects such as how to run effective meetings, effective delegation and improved presentation skills.
Trainees will gain practical business understanding in areas such as finance, marketing and employment law, as well as a unique insight into the supply chain and customer focus.
It will culminate in trainees having the chance to spend time on the shop floor in their local Tesco, gaining first-hand experience of how product is handled and merchandised.
Guy Moreton, director at MorePeople, said: “This is something that the Tesco suppliers believe adds value to their businesses and Tesco believes it will add value for the consumer. It’s about recognising that they have good people in their suppliers’ businesses, and that they can be developed further. In order to retain the best people companies need to pay serious attention to their development.
Financial incentives will only take you so far - the best quality people are looking beyond headline figures at their long term career prospects.”
Peter Durose, Tesco’s category director for produce said, “Our suppliers go to great lengths on behalf of Tesco and our customers and we are always keen to support anything that can help the two get closer.
“In an increasingly competitive labour market all companies need to find new and innovative ways of retaining the best talent. What we are offering to suppliers is a unique approach to learning and development between a multiple retailer and its supply chain.
“In order to deliver products and services which continue to meet our customers expectations we need to work in partnership to create a world-class supply base, with companies run by world class leaders, inspiring world class teams.
“We recognise that all of us will only continue to prosper if we continually invest in our people - and that means throughout the supply chain,” Durose added.
Langmead Farms is one of the companies taking part in the scheme. Georgina Jackson is an account executive with the supplier, and said: “Langmead’s culture has constant learning at its core, which was one of the reasons I joined the company. This Tesco course is unique in that it focuses not only on me, as an individual, but also my company and my customer. I am looking forward to applying what I learn for the benefit of all three.”
