Tesco in traffic-light trial

Tesco will begin trials of its controversial traffic lights labelling system with consumer panels in the UK this month. The traffic system is intended to help customers distinguish at a glance, healthy foods marked green from those that are less healthy red.

The approach has been criticised by some nutritionists who warn that there are no good and bad foods, rather good and bad diets and it could be misleading for consumers.

However, the store has made clear the new labels will not appear on shelves until it is satisfied that there is "consumer buy-in," it said.

The trials will offer consumers a variety of options to help Tesco decide how, if at all, to introduce the idea. The retailer has not yet decide on what basis to categorise foods either.
