Tesco heads Christmas pack

Tesco is set to be the big festive winner over Christmas, with Wednesday predicted to be a crucial day for the UK’s largest supermarket.

Tesco, as well as Asda, expect Wednesday to be the busiest shopping day of the year, with the former’s cash machines set to dispense £1 billion over the Christmas period.

Asda reckons the shopping rush will peak shortly after midday on December 23, accord to The Telegraph.

An estimated £4bn was spent by UK consumers over the weekend, while total retail sales are said to be well ahead of last year’s £34.5bn due to increased positivity from shoppers, according to the British Retail Consortium.

Figures from the Office of National Statistics indicated November had been a disappointing month for the high street.

Analysts predicted less discounting this year than before Christmas 2008, with prices only likely to be cut after Christmas Day.

Recent research from Verdict revealed how dominant retailers have become in the economy compared with a quarter of a century ago, now accounting for 26 per cent of national income.
