Tesco, the number-one retailer in the UK, has the slowest checkouts and worst queues, a year-long study has found.

Shoppers take an average of 6min 5sec to pass through the tills at Tesco - more than 90 seconds longer than at the fastest checkouts at Somerfield, according to a survey by The Grocer.

The checkout times were monitored every week for a year by 60 shoppers.

The study found that Asda was the cheapest store for 70 per cent of the year when prices of 33 items were compared.

Tesco came in second ahead of Morrissons and Sainsbury’s joint third.

Morrisons was found to be the least likely to be out of stock and as voted best for customer service.
