Tesco had a happy Christmas

Group sales at the UK's leading supermarket for the seven weeks ending January 3, 2004 increased by 16.7 per cent. Total UK sales for the period were up 15.4 per cent and like for like sales were up 7.5 per cent driven by strong volumes of 7.7 per cent and a small level of deflation of 0.2 per cent.

Last week's Journal reported that in the five-week period before Christmas, Tesco's fresh produce department sold 10,000 tonnes of soft citrus, 1,800 tonnes of carrots, 3,800t of Brussels sprouts, 32,000t of potatoes and 400t of chestnuts.

However, it was non-food that put in the strongest performance with CD and DVD sales accounting for a 29.4 per cent increase in Tesco's home entertainment sales

The store also announced that international sales were up 22 per cent over the Christmas and New Year period.

Industry estimates suggest Tesco's market share in the UK now stands at 27 per cent.
