Tesco is back in growth

Tesco has grown its market share for the first time 2011 reaching a new figure of 28.2 per cent, according to new Kantar figures published today (18 October).

The UK’s largest retailer also increased sales by 1.3 per cent – its first return to growth since 2015 – and growing ahead of the market at 0.8 per cent, during the 12 weeks to 9 October 2016.

Analysts said produce and ready meals are among the fastest-growing lines at Tesco, as well as its new ‘Farm Brands’ and its standard own-label.

'Sales growth has been strongest among family shoppers, while improved trading from its larger supermarket and Extra stores has supported this month’s gains,' said Kantar analyst Fraser McKevitt.

Iceland, Co-op and Waitrose also grew market share this month, and in Iceland this growth was driven by chilled and ambient grocery sales, not just core frozen lines.

McKevitt added: “Co-op’s sales are up by 3.1 per cent compared to a year ago, taking share up to 6.5 per cent of the market. Consumers are continuing to buy from Co-op stores more frequently with the average shopper now visiting almost twice a week – an eight per cent increase.”

At Sainsbury’s sales fell by 0.4 per cent, while Morrisons sales dropped by three per cent. Asda sales fell by 5.2 per cent – its slowest rate of decline for four months – and saw its premium own-label sales increase of eight per cent.

Aldi and Lidl continue to grow sales, up by 11.4 and 8.4 per cent respectively.
