Tesco gloom as grip slips

Tesco looks set to lose ground in market share on rivals Asda and Morrisons, while Sainsbury’s will also come into contention in the fight for the retail market.

Next week, Tesco is expected to report like-for-like sales growth of 4.3 per cent over the past three months - excluding fuel, VAT and opening of new stores.

Its growth is barely half that of rivals Asda and Morrisons, which recently unveiled growth of 8.4 per cent and 8.2 per cent respectively.

Sainsbury's, also set to announce its quarterly sales next week, is looking to gain ground on Tesco following strong sales of 7.3 per cent on the corresponding quarter last year.

And analysts are predicting that Sainsbury's will again show growth well ahead of Tesco.

Asda's parent group Wal-Mart last week revealed weekly sales at the UK's number-two chain were up around 12.5 per cent.

Some analysts have argued that Tesco’s strategy of cutting prices has been successful in stemming loses in customer traffic, but sales growth and market share appear to have taken the hit.

Tesco's market share is down to 30.8 per cent from 31.1 per cent in the same period last year.
