Tesco has denied claims by US food industry critic and Perishable Pundit Jim Prevor that its US business is failing to crack the market.

The retail giant has dismissed suggestions that its Fresh & Easy stores, launched in November, have failed to compete with rivals to pull in consumers.

Jim Prevor, who writes the blog, perishablepundit.com, and edits two magazines on the grocery industry, delivered a damning verdict on the chain, claiming the stores were routinely almost empty.

He concluded that “Tesco has yet to prove the viability of the Fresh & Easy concept”.

A Tesco spokesman said: “While it is still early days, we are pleased with how things are going, and the customer reaction is particularly encouraging.”

Tesco will update the market on its US venture alongside its full-year results in April.
