Tesco has begun the sale of a new purple potato just weeks after Sainsury’s introduced Albert Bartlett’s Purple Majesty.

The Purple Mountain, which has been sourced from the US and China, is currently on a promotion to save 50p from its £2 retail price for a 500g pack.

The sweet potato features in Tesco’s Finest range and is the Purple Mountain name comes from the literal translation of its name in China.

Tim Pratt, technical manager potatoes at Tesco, said: “We want to make Tesco the destination shop for the exotic sweet potato category. We already stock the white and orange flesh potatoes, and we hope that our latest addition to the range will add more excitement to the category.

"Our customers always look for new vegetable varieties, and the intense purple flesh of this sweet potato is certain to help liven up their dinner plates.

He added: "There is no other sweet potato like this on sale in the UK. As well as being visually striking, they are very good for you too.”
