Tesco has come under fire from shoppers after doubling the price of loose bananas.
Britain’s largest retailer has begun charging 25p for individual bananas at their Metro stores rather than by weight. Shoppers could previously buy a kilogram of bananas at Tesco Metro stores for 76 pence, which worked out at around 10-15p per banana depending on the size.
Tesco responded to complaints telling the Mirror that they had raised the prices on premium products due to higher operating costs.
'To make it simpler, we're moving to selling loose bananas by a single price rather than weight,” a spokesperson said.
'We already do this in our Express stores as do many of our competitors, and by changing we're making the price clearer and speeding up the checkout time. Due to the higher costs involved in operating our Express and London Metro stores there is a small premium on a number of products.
'Our London Metro stores are in prime, central locations where leases are very expensive in comparison to out of town Extras and Superstores.'
Some customers criticised the price rise on social media however, with one user stating: '#bananas in Tesco regent St London have always been by weight now they are 25p each #ripoff.”
