Tesco announces first-half results

Tesco has announced its results for the 24-week period ending August 9 and has reported that group sales are up 17 per cent to £14.9 billion. The store has also revealed that UK sales grew by £12bn in the same period with like-for-like growth at 6.3 per cent.

The group states its development programme in the UK is on track with 39 stores opening in the first half and is planning to open a further 21 Tesco Extra stores and 35 Convenience Express shops.

Chief executive Terry Leahy said: “It has been an outstanding first half. Customers have told us what they want and we have been doing a better job for them across the group.”

The store has created 22,000 jobs this year worldwide and is looking to grow its overseas business with a further 37 hypermarkets opening this year.
