Tanzanian avocados hit the UK

Mack Multiples has predicted a rosy future for Tanzanian avocados after receiving 20 tonnes of the fruit last week.

The avocados are expected to be on retail shelves next week in trial quantities as Mack looks to build interest among supermarkets.

The company is sourcing mainly Hass from Tanzanian producer The Rungwe Avocado Company - which is supplied by 2,000 small-scale growers - and predicts potential of up to 4,000 tonnes within six years.

Tanzanian growers who had switched to avocado production would benefit from returns two to three times what they had received from producing tea, said Mack technologist Rob Hooper.

“They are coming into the market at a time when supply is down and demand is growing,” he said.

Last year Mack received its first five tonnes of the fruit.
