A Spanish retailer has announced plans to use Radio frequency tagging (RFID) within the fresh produce area of a new logistics centre.

The Mercadona chain has installed the tags at its new facility near Madrid, and will use the technology to identify system pallets and help it achieve traceability at a vital section of the supply chain.

The company said it hopes the long-term benefits of the system will bring

cost benefits through less wastage and quicker identification of problems.

The new logistics centre, which has been designed to handle 198,000 cubic feet per day in the fresh and frozen goods areas, as well as 265,000 cubic feed of goods per day within the dry goods section, will use German firm Witron Logistik & Informatik’s Order Picking Machinery (OPM) for the fully automated picking of cases to ensure optimum supply to the supermarket's retail stores.

For the identification of system pallets, used for storing all incoming pallets in the goods-in area, Witron is using RFID tags integrated into each system pallet, rather than conventional barcode labels.

The company claims that this provides new benefits for Mercadona by increasing the reliability of the entire goods-in system.
