Tabloid promotes 'wonky veg pledge'

The Sun newspaper has started a ‘wonky veg pledge’ to petition supermarkets to stock misshapen produce so millions of tonnes of fruit and vegetables are no longer thrown away every year.

Nearly 50 per cent of British carrots are dumped, which keeps the price artificially high, according to campaigners.

Food analyst Tristram Stuart told The Sun that the major multiples must give customers the option to decide for themselves what fruit and vegetables they buy.

He added: “We’ve got to stop this madness. We must tell shops we want to buy good-tasting fruit and veg regardless of how it looks.”

It comes as campaigners today highlight the issue in Trafalgar Square.
