Privately run market authority Sydney Markets Ltd will host the World Union of Wholesale Markets meeting in Sydney on November 17-19.

The three-day meeting is expected to involve more than 100 senior market managers from around the world as well as senior government officials.

The challenges of the modern market environment - including competition, profitability, privatisation, consumer demand and future planning will go under the spotlight at the World Union of Wholesale Markets (WUWM) Meeting in Sydney from 17-19 November 2004.

SML’s acting ceo Brad Latham, said the purpose of the bi-annual WUWM meeting was information exchange, networking and the sharing of knowledge and expertise between fresh produce markets throughout the world.

"As host, SML can give international delegates insight into the strategies of Australia’s largest fresh produce market. For managers of markets and allied industries, the meeting is a once in a lifetime opportunity to network with some of the brightest minds in markets globally," Latham said.

The meeting sessions, drawing on Australian and international speakers, focus on the strategies of wholesale fresh produce markets across Australia and internationally, and will provide insights into value adding through privatisation, technology, operational efficiencies, marketing initiatives, infrastructure development and the like.

Latham said the WUWM meeting will include tours of Sydney Markets, Australia’s key centre for the marketing of fresh fruit, vegetables and flowers; as well as Sydney Markets community markets; key retail outlets in Sydney; the Sydney Fish Market, and optional market tours in other metropolitan centres.

"We are very excited to be hosting this event and showcasing Australia’s world-class fresh produce and markets.," said Latham said.
