Swiss potential in niche produce lines was highlighted by fruit-growers’ federation swissfruit, the country’s federation of potato growers swisspatat, the vegetable growers’ organisation VSGP and swisscofel, representing Switzerland’s fruit, vegetable and potato traders.

The Swiss booths featured high quality niche products, some having been bred by the growers themselves. “Here in Berlin we are displaying the tasty, crisp Swiss apple varieties Maigold, Mairac and Golden Victor,” said Bernadette Galliker of swissfruit. Golden Victor has a red blush, is relatively large and with a quality comparable to that of Golden Delicious. “This apple is being exported with great success to France in particular,” Bernadette Galliker added.

Marc Wermelinger of swisscofel believes that good export prospects exist above all for integrated and organically grown vegetables. “Switzerland is playing a leading role in organic production in Europe,” he claimed. This is being strongly supported by the research work that is being carried out. “Swiss organic vegetables are of excellent quality, which is a result of extensive expertise and careful production methods.”

He explained that the range of organically grown vegetables in Switzerland is very extensive and can meet just about any customer requirements. Swiss growers of organic vegetables are already registering initial export successes.
