Award winning vegetable supplier Greyfriars UK has launched a new recycling iniative for sweetcorn waste.
The company, based in North Yorkshire, is converting the waste by-product of its state-of-the-art sweetcorn stripping and packing line into cattle feed.
The new line, opened in the summer, has the capacity to process 3,000 corn cob packs an hour and produces around 10 tonnes of waste husks, cob tips and butts a week.
To minimise environmental impact as well as disposal costs, the company is now supplying the waste to a north east stock feed dealer for use as maize silage.
Greyfriars was the winner of the Re:fresh packer of the year award 2004.
