A leading supplier of US sweet potatoes has established a base in the UK. Scott Farms Inc of North Carolina set up the base in Honeybourne, Evesham.

Simon Hobbs and Darren Smith have been appointed to lead the UK business, managing the sales, marketing and operational activity. Stan Smith has been appointed as head of finance and company secretary.

A fourth-generation family company, Scott Farms grows on more than 5,000 acres in Wilson in the southern US state and ships its product to the UK via Felixstowe.

The UK is a growth market for sweet potatoes and accounts for some 60 per cent of all sweet potatoes sold to Europe. Scott Farms, which claims to supply 10 per cent of the sweet potatoes sold to the UK, reports sales increasing dramatically year on year.

In addition, the company is maximising the use of its distribution and marketing networks to import legumes from Kenya and asparagus from Mexico, Peru and the US.
