A new set of awards designed to recognise moves to make businesses more sustainable were launched in London last week.

The SAI Global 2008 UK Sustainable Business Awards have been modelled on an Australian version and will hit the UK for the first time in June.

The event has been billed as an attempt to promote, nurture, recognise and celebrate organisational excellence in all its forms.

SAI Global has named 13 categories that correlate to specific sections in its Business Excellence Framework and, for the first time, a food-safety management category will feature in the awards.

Other honours will include customer service, risk management, ethics, corporate and social responsibility and environmental management.

Andrew Cahn, chief executive of UK Trade and Investment, launched the event in London last week. He said: “The visibility of sustainability standards in the UK is growing… This reflects the growing opportunities for business, as well as the nation’s continuous effort to develop into a sustainable, environmentally sound economy.

“Standards provide a level of security and risk management in an environmentally savvy consumer market, and play a valuable role for businesses wishing to validate their practises and products…

“The UK Sustainable Business Awards is a great way to achieve increased awareness and uptake of sustainability practices amongst businesses worldwide.”

The awards are open to companies incorporated or physically operating in the UK, including subsidiaries of multi-national organisations,

The closing date for entry is April 4, 2008.

The ceremony will be held in June next year.
