Supermarkets defend UK plum approach

UK supermarkets are defending their stance in the wake of criticism of UK plum pricing.

Growers were last week up in arms, claiming imports from Spain were being favoured over their own produce in what is a bumper year for UK producers.

A Tesco spokeswoman told freshinfo: “We have British plums for sale in stores throughout the UK. In previous years, we have been unable to satisfy demand for them due to the unpredictable UK weather and so we have needed to plan ahead by importing some product to ensure availability for customers. Our British plums are clearly labelled for anyone who wants to buy them.”

A Morrisons spokeswoman told freshinfo that the retailer was also very supportive of UK producers and outlined the store’s offer this season. She said: “We work extremely closely with our fresh fruit suppliers and strongly support the British fruit farming industry. As such, we have a large percentage of British plums in our stores at the moment. We believe in offering our customers a choice of seasonal produce at its best and have offered early-, mid- and late-season UK plum varieties, including Victoria, Opal, Reeves and Marjorie Seedling - which are making up a third of our plum sales.”
