An investigation by BBC programme Panorama has found that deep price cuts at UK supermarkets do not always represent the value they claim.
In the fresh produce aisles, BBC investigators found discrepancies between loose and pre-packed lines .
At Sainsbury's, researchers found that a pack of five bananas cost £1, while five loose fruits cost just 42p.
This worked out at almost 99p a kilo more expensive.
The story was similar at Asda, where three red onions in a net cost £2.85 a kilo, compared with 86p a kilo if bought loose.
Meanwhile in Morrisons, prices for poly-bagged fruit were found to be cheaper than loose with US Empire apples retailing at £1.82 a kilo in bags, but £2.99 a kilo for loose product.
Panorama: The Truth About Supermarket Price Wars, will air on BBC One today at 20:30 GMT.
