Raspberries: real strength

Raspberries: real strength

Waitrose customers responded well to the first glimpse of spring-time sunshine last week and soft fruit was one of the best performing categories in the whole store with impressive year-on-year figures, according to Tom Athron, finance director at the upmarket retailer.

“Sales were up 45 per cent,” he said. “The real strength came from raspberries, which were up 86 per cent, strawberry sales went up by 51 per cent and blueberries rose by 27 per cent.”

Sunshine inspired shoppers to buy prepared salads, which were up by almost 21 per cent and tomatoes, which went up by almost 17 per cent. Avocado sales grew by 32 per cent year-on-year and prepared vegetables grew more than 32 per cent. Chillies also had a great week - up 24 per cent, specifically red chillies, which were up 37 per cent year-on-year.
