The c-store sector has vowed to fight against any moves to extend Sunday trading hours for the big retailers.
The government has announced it is set to examine the situation and has commissioned a study to look into the impact longer hours would have on retailers, consumers and staff.
Alan Johnson, trade and industry secretary, said the review had been prompted by the fact Sunday has become one of the busiest days of the week for retailers.
The Association of Convenience Stores said it would oppose any moves that would allow the supermarkets to open for longer. It was said longer Sunday trading would damage its sector.
Union bosses also condemned the move. A spokesman for USDAW said: “Our major concern is that our members could end up being forced to work on a Sunday because retailers would need more staff.”
