Sun World has presented a cheque for nearly $30,000 (£15,000) to the Peruvian minister of agriculture, to assist the victims of the August 15 earthquake that struck the Peruvian region of Ica.

Ismael Benavides Ferreyros received the cheque in Lima on November 29.

One week after the disaster, the Californian breeding company initiated an Ica Aid earthquake recovery programme - for every pallet of imported Peruvian minneolas, $25 was contributed to the fund. The programme was a collective wholesale and retail effort.

“This cheque represents how effective the produce industry can be in times of natural disasters, and represents a contribution made by 57 retailers and wholesalers,” said Sun World president Bruce Burton.

The funds will assist in rebuilding the agricultural communities of Ica, Chincha and Pisco, which were hardest hit by the earthquake.
