The tomatoes will be grown over the summer too

Franco-Moroccan tomato exporter Azura will be growing cherry and cocktail tomatoes during the summer months for the first time this year.

The move is part of a bid to meet year-round demand in Europe and the UK for Moroccan fruit. The new production site will be located in Dakhla, in the south of the country.

“We are working in partnership with our packers and distributors,” a spokesman told freshinfo in Berlin. “We have 250 varieties on trial each year and are looking to find varieties with better taste, appearance and shelf life.”

Azura also produces Charentais melons and operates citrus orchards in Agadir and Marrakech.

“We have the same strategy for our tomatoes as for our citrus - to be integrated and manage all steps from nursery to distribution in order to be reactive to the market and meet client demands, offering consistency and service,” added the spokesman.

As increasing numbers of people visit Morocco and see its production and exports for themselves, Azura believes the country’s image is improving all the time.

“People have an idea of the country but when they visit, they are impressed,” added the Azura spokesman.
