Strong start for yellow courgettes in Sainsbury's

Cornish yellow courgettes have debuted in Sainsbury’s this year with early sales strong.

Supplier Southern England Farms (SEF), based in Cornwall, hopes the Cornish Gold courgettes - which hit shelves last month - will be on shelf until mid-September.

The listing across stores in the South West represents a trial period for the product which is said to be garnering increased sales week on week from a low base. Product is supplied into Sainsbury’s Emerald Park depot.

The supermarket has targeted Cornwall and the South West as an area where “the regional message is strong” and is retailing a three pack of the courgettes at £1.74.

SEF owner and director Greville Richards told freshinfo: “The Cornish Gold needs slightly warmer conditions han green courgettes to get good yields but is a very appealing product.

“It’s the first time we’ve done it and we are very pleased with the product.”

Richards said the company has “added a month to each side of the courgette season” with supplies three to four weeks early in May and likely to end two three weeks later in October in a “bumper year”.

Sainsbury’s potato, exotic veg, peas and bean buyer Julien Roberts told FPJ: “Courgette Gold sales have been going very well in the South West and we have been very pleased with it.

“This year it is largely a trial. We will do some local work on promoting it if volumes continue but nothing substantial until at least next year.”
