Strawberry recovery

“While we were expecting an improvement in the weather last week, continuing low temperatures in both Spain and Morocco have kept supplies tight to date,” said Ian Waller of The Summerfruit Company. “However, we are still hoping for a greater level of normality over the next seven days.”

Adrian Olins of BerryWorld reported the situation was already improving on Wednesday. “Strawberry volumes are picking up significantly on last week,” he said.

“There have been quality problems in Huelva, particularly with dry calyx. However, they are having higher temperatures and much better weather in the region this week and fruit is at its best quality. Sales are excellent and a lot of that is down to the fine weather here in the UK.

“Morocco started a lot earlier than in other years and volumes are currently good. We have also had some very good raspberries from Morocco,” Olins added.
