Storms tear into bananas in Belize

Three nights of heavy winds and storms in Belize last week have struck banana plantations.

Producers and authorities are still assessing damage in the Central American country that ships all its bananas through Fyffes to the UK.

The farm minister Rene Montero has already visited plantations and met with growers and is seeking funding in the form of loans for producers to help them get back on their feet. The Banana Growers Association has told local media losses could total $20 million and may have wiped out up to 40 per cent of the crop. It may take up to nine months for the industry to recover as replanting work started this week.
