A conference on fresh produce health claims is to take place at Stockbridge Technology Centre(STC) next month.

Hosted by the National Farmers’ Union (NFU) and the Horticultural Development Company (HDC), the discussions, entitled “Health Claims for Fruit and Vegetables: The Facts”, will look at the truth behind the much-clouded issue.

Sophia Johansson of Leatherhead Food Research will talk on the theme “What is a Health Claim? How to develop and steer a health claim application through EFSA” in a session chaired by NFU horticulture board chairman Sarah Pettitt.

Speakers from Newcastle and Reading universities, The London Medical School and Royal Holloway will cover beetroot, tomatoes, berries and carrots among other products in relation to health claims in the afternoon session, to be chaired by the HDC’s Neil Bragg.

The event takes place on 23 June at the STC in Selby.
