StePac LA has developed a degradable modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) for bananas that is economical, as well as ecological.

Eco-Xtend bags contain a prodegradant that accelerates the degradation of plastic and gives a shelf life of one year.

Eco-Xtend MAP for bananas maintain post-ripened fruit for up to 10 days on the shelf. The bag’s polymers are engineered to maintain the correct balance between oxygen and carbon dioxide in the bag.

Israel Ben Tzur, StePac ceo, said: “Although offering a green line of products is a goal, we identified some time ago that, in today’s market, this is not enough. Our customers were telling us that, while supporting a healthy environment is important, they needed to cut costs as well. So we went back to the drawing board and developed Eco-Xtend.”

The product has received the Symphony Environmental Technologies’ seal of compliance, certifying that it is a fully degradable product.

StePac is based in northern Israel and is part of UK-based company DS Smith. It recently introduced its Xsense perishables quality-monitoring system to help cold chain logistics managers with product delivery.
