Standard strawberries match organic and premium

Standard strawberries are just as good as the organic and premium alternatives, a consumer survey has revealed on the first day of the Wimbledon tournament.

A panel of 120 blind testers sampled strawberries from ranges sold by Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury’s, Morrisons, Waitrose and Marks & Spencer, for research by Which? Online.

No difference was found in their taste or appearance, but a huge discrepancy in price was highlighted.

Organic strawberries were twice the price of standard varieties, while premium products cost almost three times as much.

Customers pay an average of £1.86 for 400g of own-brand strawberries, compared with £3.76 for organic and £4.56 for premium punnets.

A Which? spokesman said: “Our research found if you're looking for the tastiest strawberries, it may not be worth paying extra for premium or organic punnets.”
