Tesco first for Kentish new potatoes

Record rainfall in May has not held up the first deliveries of Kentish new potatoes to Tesco, according to local supplier St Nicholas Court Farms.

Following a second dry winter in the south of England, the heavy May rainfall, with over 115mm falling in east Kent, had delayed the start of crop lifting.

But Isle of Thanet grower Richard Ash and his team of pickers worked through the cold conditions and showers to deliver the first Kentish new potatoes to local Tesco supplier St Nicholas Court Farms on June 1.

These were immediately placed on shelves in the Tesco store at Manston on the Isle of Thanet, where they were well received by shoppers.

The new potatoes have been available in Tesco stores across Kent from June 5.
