Spud folk flock to BP2003

Potato growers, agronomists, suppliers and buyers are expected to make the trip to Nottinghamshire next week to attend British Potato 2003 (September 3 and 4).

Event organiser, the British Potato Council, is making finishing touches to one of the world's largest single-crop events, held at the Showground in Newark.

The changing world of potato production management and consumer eating habits will be the focus of BPC-organised seminars and workshops. These include a pesticide use debate and a review of global changes in the food sector. Visitors will also be equipped to tackle new hard-hitting water legislation and potato blight. Specialist BPC zones will also cover key seed, storage and quality control issues.

Harvesting equipment machinery from nine manufacturers will lift a 32-acre processing crop, managed by the event co-sponsors the Higgins Group.

Tubers will be handled and graded straight-off the field by grading lines at the Showground and transported to a McCain processing plant.

The event is sponsored by Belchim Crop Protection and opens from 9am-5.30pm.
