Hargreaves Plants has announced that asparagus variety Guelph Millennium peaks production in June.

The wholesale plant supplier has been looking at the variety as part of its asparagus cultivar trials in West Norfolk for the last four years, and Guelph Millennium asparagus crowns have been available to growers for three years.

The variety was found to have the best spear quality of all named varieties in Hargreaves Plants’ trials, where more than 250 selections from 16 breeders have been tested. In a difficult asparagus-growing season, Millennium has consistently produced the best quality spears and reached a production peak in June, when other standard cultivars were slowing down.

Jamie Petchell, Hargreaves Plants’ asparagus product manager, said: “With ever increasing labour costs, it is essential to use asparagus varieties that consistently produce the best marketable yields. That is why Guelph Millennium is so good.

A variety develops over years, so we need to trial it for a couple of seasons to see what strengths the variety has.”

Guelph Millennium, the green asparagus variety bred in Canada, is exclusive to Hargreaves Plants. It is now the most widely distributed cultivar in the company’s range of asparagus crowns.
