Spanish hauliers agreed on Monday to suspend their strike over fuel prices only temporarily, pending the outcome of negotiations, as exports started to get back to normal.

The strike has meant that melons from Almería that went into storage are now clashing with produce coming through from Murcia. One importer said: “We have mountains of fruit coming through. We are going from famine to feast.”

By mid-week the situation was almost “back to normal”, according to another importer. “There are still a few hold-ups, but sendings are on track again,” he told freshinfo on Wednesday.

However, as freshinfo went to press, similar strikes by hauliers in France were rumoured for Friday.
