Spanish strawberry plantings get underway

Strawberry growers have begun planting in the main Spanish production area of Huelva this week, according to the Huelva association of strawberry producers and exporters who account for 94 per cent of the national crop.

Early indications are that growers hope to reach similar production levels to last season at 280,000 tonnes – a 20 to 25 per cent increase on the 2010-11 season thanks mainly to the introduction of new varieties. Planting conditions so far have been ideal with intermittent rain ensuring that irrigation costs are kept to a minimum.

Freshuelva is also taking part in the European Agriplasticvalue project to recycle plastic sheeting used in the strawberry production operation.
