While it is not the largest of the Spanish regions, Extremadura is claiming the title of the world’s largest exporter of plums after last year’s season.
Marisol Hurtado, from the region’s foreign trade promotion department, said: “We are the market leader in the cultivation of plums and are second only to Murcia as a supplier of stonefruit.”
Out of a total of 250 million kilogrammes of stonefruit, 80 per cent, or 187m kg, was exported.
The success of the season saw the region double its stand space at Fruit Logistica this year, to 500 square metres.
