Spanish planting setback

Spanish strawberry plantings began last week in the main production area of Huelva in south-western Spain. Alberto Garrocho, president of industry body Freshuelva said the start is slightly behind previous years.

“The high temperatures have set plantings back a little,” he explained. “If these continue, then it will mean higher costs for growers who will have to irrigate more regularly in order to lower plant temperature.”

Producers expect to employ some 4,800-5,200 people throughout the season including at harvest time. Following an agreement with the regional executive this season, some 20 per cent will be local labourers reducing the sector’s reliance on foreign workers.
