Say Hello to the Nispero starts next week as fruit is due to arrive in major retail stores. The consignments will benefit from in-store tastings and explanatory leaflets at point of sale, giving information on when fruit is ready to eat and reassuring consumers that a blotchy appearance does not mean samples are past their best.

The initial retail price will be £1.99 for a punnet of eight fruits but special offers will also form a major part of the launch programme.

Initially fruit will be marketed in the south-east before expanding swiftly into a nationwide programme in selected stores.

It is the first time that the UK has been targeted for a large volume export campaign although trials and other attempts to break into the UK market have met with limited success over the past five years.

'We are confident there is exciting potential for building a market for nisperos in this country,' said Foods From Spain director Maria José Sevilla. 'UK multiples and their customers are keen to try new fruits which are distinctly different in both appearance and taste from those they are accustomed to. The nispero meets these requirements perfectly.' The product hails from the Callosa d'En Sarria in eastern Spain and benefits from denomination of origin status.
