Producers organisation Freshuelva representing strawberry growers in the Huelva area has calculated losses at e6,000 a hectare reaching a total of e43 million across the whole sector.

Representatives from the sector as a whole have met with regional executive authorities. They are formally requesting that, with their national government counterparts, the authorities act to ensure the introduction of adequate insurance cover for growers against inclement weather. The Spanish strawberry sector has long complained of the inadequacy of existing arrangements. They are also asking that the issue of compensation for affected companies be addressed.
