The green asparagus season has started in Andalusia in southern Spain some eight to 10 days later than usual due to low temperatures at the end of February.
Growers are looking forward to considerably higher yields this year from their crowns due to modernisation of production methods.
Output is expected to reach 38,000 tonnes up 35 per cent on the yield five years ago from the same acreage.
Some 70-80 per cent of the crop is destined for export markets, principally France, Italy and the UK.
