Spanish fruit and vegetable exports enjoyed an upsurge in the first quarter of the year rising year-on-year 18 per cent in volume and seven per cent in value according to producer-exporters federation Fepex.

The UK is ranked third in importance behind Germany and France with a a12 per cent share of Spain’s total exports compared to Germany’s 19 and France’s 18 per cent shares. UK imports of fresh produce from Spain also rose by 12 per cent to reach 396,067 tonnes during the quarter.

Tomato sendings from Spain rose by 20 per cent year on year for the period to 393,000t with a four per cent up lift in volume to €386 million.

However, overall Spain’s most exported salads - cucumber, tomato, lettuce and capsicum - showed an increase in volume but a 12 per cent decline in value.
