According to the Murcia federation of co-ops, Fecoam, growers of broccoli are cutting only their best quality produce and leaving smaller samples of lower quality product in the field because prices paid by supermarkets across Europe are below the cost of production.
Technical manager at the federation, Andrés López said growers are hoping for a change in fortunes. 'Producers would like to see some cooler weather to reduce the rate at which product is going out,' said López. 'And because we are seeing an overlap in programmed plantings now, there will be a gap further down the line which hopefully will exert upward pressure on prices.'
