The first supplies of this season’s South African mangoes hit UK shores last weekend.

Simon Curry of Westfalia Marketing told freshinfo: ”This year it will be a small crop, but we are really focusing on exporting good-quality products.

"We have started with Kent and supplies of Keitt will kick off in a few weeks’ time, running through to the end of the season in early April.”

Early indications are for a smaller South African avocado crop this season - around 10 per cent down on this time last year.

“Last year was an ‘on’ year, with high export packout and good volumes,” said Curry. “This year will be smaller due to weather conditions and the cyclical nature of the crop.”

Westfalia’s first supplies of South African Fuerte avocados are expected to arrive in the UK in April.
