Something to sprout about this Christmas

Stronger flavoured red sprouts are going on on sale in Morrisons and M&S to add a splash of colour to Christmas dinner.

The Morrisons variety is available until January thanks to the supermarket’s farmers in Lincolnshire.

Wayne Pleasance, Morrisons’ sprout buying manager, said: “We all know that sprouts are a traditional part of the Christmas dinner, but many people are a bit bored of them, or don’t actually like them, despite all their nutritional benefits.

“Red sprouts are an ideal solution as they have a different flavour and also add an extra bit of colour to the Christmas meal.”

The retailer will also stocking the bushy green part at the tip of the sprout stalk known as sprout tops.

These taste like a cross between a sweet cabbage and a green sprout and the leaves can be an alternative to spring greens.

M&S's red sprouts, which will be available from the end of this month, have been grown in the UK by Andrew and Frank Roger, two brothers who have been working with the retailer since 1976.

The red “super sprouts” will contain higher levels of vitamin C than traditional green sprouts, according to Dr Simon Coupe, an agronomist at M&S.
