The recent sunny spells have prompted a sudden surge in strawberry sales at Somerfield in the last three weeks, with the supermarket reporting record sales of more than one million punnets.

Measuring more than 400t, this sales volume smashes all previous sales records for the fruit.

Somerfield strawberry buyer, Ben Lainton said: “We have rewarded our loyal customers with a cracking market-leading strawberry deal of 99p for 400g, and sales have gone through the roof causing ripples across the high street.

“Our suppliers have supported this fantastic deal which will lead nicely into the start of the British season which is just around the corner. Customers will then be able to buy local fruit in local stores.”
