Somerfield starts UK tom season

Somerfield is taking delivery next week of its first English cherry tomatoes of the year from Wight Salads. The fruit is being marketed under the variety name Mayfair and bears the store's So Good premium label. Following on in the supply calendar from the cherry offer will be on-the-vine and loose round tomatoes.

"This demonstrates our commitment and shows that we fully back UK tomatoes," said Somerfield buyer Dominic Edwards. Fruit is going into Somerfield stores in south-west England.

But the season is beginning slightly behind last year. "Light levels have been lower this winter by about seven per cent compared to last year," said Wight Salads's Simon Conway. "This means that we are running about a week later across all crops."
