Somerfield is committed to supporting its English grower base

Somerfield is stocking UK-grown Braeburn for the first time this season with fruit unveiled in 600 stores nation-wide this week. The apples are supplied by Worldwide Fruit.

The development is in line with Somerfield's commitment to UK growers, the store said and has been made possible by fine growing conditions and increased plantings. "We're proud to be able to support British farmers and growers," said the store's head of public relations Pete Williams. "The quality of our home-grown apples is second to none and we hope that customers all over the UK will enjoy buying the best of British."

Somerfield's efforts to stock UK-produced foods are part of Local Life campaign, set up to lend support to local growers and farmers and increase its range of locally produced food.

To celebrate the initiative the chain's Uckfield store is holding an apple-tastic Funday on Saturday featuring Punch and Judy shows and a fireworks display as well as jugglers, stilt walkers and face, apple-packed games and competitions and fund-raising for the Lions Club.
