Somerfield will feature the first English cherry tomatoes of the season – grown in the Isle of Wight – in 80 stores across the south-west from next week, the earliest the retailer has ever begun the domestic cherry tom season and possibly the earliest start across the entire multiple retail sector.

Somerfield salads buyer Dominic Edwards told freshinfo: 'This is another step towards meeting our corporate aim of optimising the offer of home-grown produce to the Somerfield customer. The excellent quality and flavour of the fruit supplied by Wight Salads is such that we can begin this early.' The tomatoes will be sold in 250g punnets, wrapped in British tomato-branded film and supported at point-of-sale by Somerfield. 'This is a great opportunity to extend the British season,' said Edwards.
