Somerfield off the Sainsbury's agenda

Sainsbury's has shelved plans to buy 171 Somerfield stores. The supermarket chain withdrew its request for the stores from the Competition Commission because the regulatory process was likely to be too expensive and time consuming.

Sainsbury's chief executive Sir Peter Davis said: "I was disappointed with the outcome of the regulatory process. However, given the current level of regulatory uncertainty in the food retail sector, we have decided not to pursue the transaction any further."

Somerfield stated: "We are not particularly surprised by the decision. The stores were never for sale."
